Since 2019, the Conservation Department of the Museum of the Americas, in collaboration with the Department of the Viceregal Americas, has been carrying out a project to study and restore a significant group of eleven paintings on canvas that make up the Life of the Virgin series, signed and dated by the New Spanish artist Miguel Cabrera in 1751.
The project has received a grant from the Getty Foundation in Los Angeles as part of its Conserving Canvas initiative, which supports professional exchange, education and training projects in the conservation and restoration of paintings on canvas, especially with regards to the structural treatment of canvas supports.
The main goals of the project are: to conserve and restore the group of canvases so that they can be exhibited and studied; to study and document the history of the pictorial series; to research the artist's pictorial techniques and materials; to exchange knowledge with other professionals about technical aspects of viceregal painting and its conservation; to train restorers in structural treatments of painting on canvas, especially of viceregal New Spanish painting; and to disseminate the work carried out through a scientific publication and an exhibition.
