In 1569 he travelled to Rome and began to work for Cardinal Acquaviva .

Then he signed up for the army. He fought at Lepanto Battleship, where he was hurt in his left arm because of an arquebus shot.

Back to Spain, Miguel was taken to Algiers as captive by Berbers. He was jailed for five years. After five attempts to escape, with a ransom paid by his family Cervantes was freed by the Trinity Fathers.
