The Oldest Pieces in the Collection

Little has surviven of the clothing worn in Spain's most glorious centuries, when the sun never set on the Spanish Empire, but our museum conserves some of the rare garments of the 16th and 17th centuries. The exhibition currently includes two examples of men's upper clothing: the close-fitting doublet, and a French pourpoint (stuffed and quilted doublet) adorned with slashes that revealed the exquisite shirts beneath, of which we conserve only a richly embroidered cuff. A feminine article we have is a pouch in which women put small personal objects.
