The Feminine Universe

Business and political life was reserved for men, as was the pursuit of the romantic ideal. Women's lives were restricted to the domestic sphere, though wives were also expected to show off their husbands' wealth and status in their dress.

Women spent a long time at their toilettes in front of the mirror, attempting to achieve the ideals of the age: sensitivity, beauty, and fragility.
