Dressing Up

The traje de sociedad (society outfit) was worn in the salons, at dances and the theatre, which were the proper places for cultivating social relations and negotiating business, political o matrimonial alliances. They provided occasions for a woman to shine in all her splendour and feel herself the centre of attention, enveloped in luxurious low-cut dresses, made from fine materials such as satin, muslin, tulle or lace. To learn how to behave in public, ladies avidly studied the etiquette manuals that were all the rage.
