Spain, ca. 1550
Fragment of blue, silk-satin fabric with backstitched float spans in bullion on a silk base of multiple colours, embroidered with gold thread applied using the “chequerboard” technique. Two textile fragments joined with a seam. Made in blue silk with satin weave, embroidery appliqué of golden metallic thread with a linen core tracing swirls and animal heads, with elements in polychromatic silk. On the upper part, a fragment of a shield in natural-coloured silk is preserved.
Remains of selvedge are preserved on one side in sepia colour with a central row in blue and white. Traces of braiding remain on the perimeter in metallic bullion threads.
A small fragment of the original lining is preserved with a taffeta weave. Subsequently a lining in hemp with a taffeta weave was added.
