Objectives

The objectives of the expansion/rehabilitation of the Sorolla Museum are:

• Expanding the main premises of the Sorolla Museum and incorporating up-to-date complementary facilities that will allow the Museum to carry out all its functions effectively and under normal circumstances.
• Restoring original spaces of the Sorolla Home that are in need of an intervention due to the passing of time, installation obsolescence, or the lack of key infrastructures.
• Providing accessibility to the new Sorolla Museum

Generically, the intervention consists of:

• General intervention on the expanded premises (no. 68 Zurbano Street) adapting the plot to its new museum usage through the incorporation of new spaces and services (temporary exhibition halls, cultural heritage asset storage, restoration studio, assembly hall, cultural heritage asset loading dock, etc.).
• Rehabilitation and restoration of historical elements at the Sorolla Home
• Usage distribution for the new spaces that will be incorporated into the Museum (both at the Sorolla Home and the expansion).
• Integration of all three architectural spaces within the Museum (Sorolla Home, offices, expansion building) in terms of connections, flows, accessibility, etc.

The general approach to interventions on different spaces is conceived as a comprehensive vision that applies to new spaces (ground and first floors of the new building and new offices at no. 68 Zurbano Street) and to current Museum spaces (Sorolla Home at no. 37 Paseo Martínez Campos).

Furthermore, the new expansion will free up spaces for public use at the Sorolla Home historic building, which are currently occupied exclusively by internal use services.

In any case, the Sorolla Home will continue to maintain the essence of Joaquín Sorolla and his family.
