The museum’s collection of photographs comprises 7,167 images, including original prints on paper, original negatives and modern prints. The close relationship between the Sorolla family and photography derives from the fact that the artist’s father-in-law, Antonio García Peris, was a photographer and the leading figure in Valencian photography of his day.

The collection includes an extensive group of family photographs. These are images that reflect the family’s private life: portraits of family members, rooms in Sorolla’s homes and studios, and the artist at work, painting in his studio and outdoors. There are also images of his social life, his exhibitions, and photographic reproductions of his works.

Another large section consists of photographs of Sorolla’s travels in Spain and abroad. There are also images of fishermen on the beach, of monuments and villages, of local people from Spain’s different regions, and landscapes.

Many of these photographs are of great value for research into Sorolla’s life and working process.

The majority were taken by family members but some are by reputed photographers of the day, including Antonio García, Christian Franzen, Ragel, Kaulak, Alfonso, and others.

In 2015 the Ministry of Culture published the “Catalogue of Photographs in the Museo SorollaNueva ventana, which can be consulted online, free of charge.

Thanks to the support of the Fundación Barrié and the Fundación Museo Sorolla, 6,593 entries have been catalogued and are accessible online.
