The Virgin and Child

escultura de madera de virgen con el niño

German School

Carved, polychromed wood, with estofado

Siglo XV-XVI

109 cm x 37 cm x 26 cm

Nº inv. 20020

This carved, polychromed wood sculpture depicts the widely represented subject of the Virgin and Child. In this case the Virgin, shown standing and crowned, originally had an object in her right hand while with her left she holds the Christ Child, who rests his two hands on her breast. The sculpture is hollowed out longitudinally at the back.

Following the German Late Gothic tradition, the image reveals a clear interest in the definition of the pronounced folds of the clothing and the Virgin’s long wavy hair which falls down over her shoulders. The crown is later, dating from the 18th century.

Joaquín Sorolla was gifted this sculpture by the German collector and antique dealer Joseph Weissberger.
