proyecto museo visigodo

The National Museum of Roman Art aspires to continue to grow and renew itself, both as an institution and as a collection. As an institution, its most immediate goal is to establish its particular role - as well as the role of museums in general - within the Spanish scientific world. In this particular case, this would entail a name change and - as has recently taken place at other state museums - its association with a National Research Centre, in this case linked to Roman times and Late Antiquity.

From the point of view of its collections, first and foremost, two architectural projects need to be completed. For one, there is the expansion (or rather, completion and refurbishment) of the Moneo Building. This will not only provide the Museum with a larger temporary exhibition and assembly hall but will also bring it up to date in areas such as lighting and air conditioning, which already require urgent intervention. The other architectural project is the creation of a new home for the Museum's Visigothic and Medieval collections, currently still housed in the old Santa Clara building. The new building will also be used to provide the institution with modern catering facilities, as well as adequate storage spaces.

In relation to the latter, and as an archaeological museum, our Museum wishes to strengthen its links with the organisation responsible for the archaeological management of Mérida, the Monumental City Consortium. This is both to update its contents and collections and to work in tandem for the benefit of the public and the scientific community.
