congreso internacional arqueologia clasica

The Research Department is responsible for the scientific work of the Institution locally, regionally and internationally.

Research at the National Museum of Roman Art has a long and recognised track record, and it is one of the most active museums in this regard in Spain. Its intense work includes the organisation of numerous scientific meetings, congresses and seminars, its involvement in various projects and the coordination of its own line of publications, including series like our monographic works on Mérida and the Studia Lusitana derive.

As suggested by the latter, it plays a particularly prominent role in the study of the ancient province of Lusitania, of which Mérida was the capital. From this derives its close work with the country to which much of the former Lusitania now belongs: Portugal. This is why the Museum aspires to a double reality in the prospective future: the creation of a National Research Centre for Roman and Visigothic Culture at the Museum and the legal recognition of the museum institution in general as a research centre.
