The Church of Santa Clara was the main building of a 17th-century convent. Its cloister is currently occupied by the Department of Culture of the Regional Government of Extremadura. The space consists of a single open-plan nave in the shape of a Latin cross, topped by a straight chancel. Its transept is covered by a dome from which half-barrel vaults with lunettes extend outwards. At the end of the nave, behind some stairs, there is a choir; this is currently closed off, as it houses one of the Institution's storerooms. On the side opposite the entrance to the building, there are two doors: one leads to the building's internal rooms and the other to a small hall.
The entire nave of the church now houses a selection of the Institution's most outstanding pieces from the Visigothic period. Meanwhile, the small room mentioned above houses specimens from other periods, such as the Middle Ages and the Modern Age. It is known as the ‘Hall of Coats of Arms’ precisely because of the presence of numerous heraldic pieces from the latter period.
