La conservación del material subacuático

Sala

Museums house our heritage and must ensure its conservation, in order to avoid its deterioration, enable its study and transmit it to future generations. When pieces remain underwater they are subjected to the effects of numerous degrading agents. Over time they adapt to their environment, but at the moment of extraction they can suffer irreversible damage caused by contact with the new environmental conditions and weathering agents.

Conservation attempts to stop these changes and prolong the life of the material the objects are made of. Restoration is part of conservation, and involves acting directly on the pieces in order to recover their documentary value rather than their original function.
