Pipe bowl found during an underwater archaeological dig in the early 1990s under the waters of the Despalmador Grande, in the port of Cartagena.Salto de línea It is made of meerschaum (sepiolite) and decorated on both sides. One side depicts a three-masted ship rigged with square sails (typical of the late 18th and early 19th centuries). The other side has plant motifs with what appears to be three poppies or opium flowers. Salto de línea Kaolin pipes were the most popular smoking utensil in the Modern Period; the fragility of this material means that they are commonly found in the areas of ports used as the dumping ground for nautical waste.
