Oceania Collections

The Oceania collection consists of some 300 objects, mostly from the 19th century. These are mostly from Micronesia (Marianas, Carolinas and Palau), but there are also some pieces from other regions. Of particular note are the shell and tortoiseshell ornaments from the Caroline Islands, the decorated skulls associated with ancestor worship from Malakula Island, the Malanggan mask from New Ireland, and the kava or umete bowl from Tahiti (18th century).
