In 2007 the Ministry of Culture created the Permanent Laboratory on Museum Visitors aimed at obtaining data on the visitors, improving the management and promoting public access to museums. The studies undertaken have enabled us to find out the visitor profile of each museum and their evaluation of the services used.
The museum receives an average of 250,000 visitors a year. They are mainly Spanish tourists who travel to Cantabria in family groups in their leisure time and holidays. This family-based activity results in Altamira being the state museum most visited by children on non-school visits and having a younger adult public, with an average age of 39. Every school year it also receives 38,000 schoolchildren from Cantabria, other Spanish regions and Europe.
After having toured the museum for approximately one-and-a-half hours, the average duration of the visit, 80% of those surveyed said they were quite or very satisfied with the visit to the museum, and almost all would recommend this visit to other people.
