En Julio de 2019, dentro de las actuaciones realizadas por el departamento de Conservación y restauración del Museo del Greco de Toledo, se llevó a cabo el arranque de parte del revestimiento de azulejo del zócalo interior de la sala conocida como La biblioteca del Marqués. Antiguas humedades procedentes del suelo, y reparaciones anteriores realizadas con materiales inadecuados, habían generado la disgregación de los morteros de agarre de los azulejos. Por ello fue necesario este arranque y posterior recolocación, previo montaje en un nuevo soporte inerte que garantizara su correcta conservación actual y futura.

Virgen and Angel of the Annunciation, 1325 [ca.] Polychrom wood 160 x 47 x 30 cm.

These two pieces were exhibited in the niches of the so-called Museum chapel, on both sides of the altarpiece of Saint Bernardin by el Greco.

They present a poor state of consolidation of the pictorial layer and the gilding. Both pieces were intervened in 1998 and returned in April of 2018 to the IPCE for a new intervention, that would allow a better appreciation of these sculptures, the oldest in our collection.

Francisco de Herrera the elder

These images illustrate the process of restoration of a canvas from the El Greco Museum (Toledo), identified as "Pentecost" and attributed to Francisco Herrera the Elder.

It is a work of large dimensions, just over 2 meters wide by 2.6 meters high, dated in the first decades of the 17th century. The main cause of deterioration is that at a certain point in its history, probably several centuries ago, the cloth was folded to be transported.Since then the painting has undergone several interventions of which, in some of the closest in time, it was adhered to a new cloth, so at the beggining of the restoration the lining was in perfect conditions. However this interventions left traces, such as repaints and varnishes that, together with the accumulation of dirt, distorted the original appearance of the painting.

In the workshops of the IPCE the frame has been replaced by a new one and those old repaints and stuccoes have been eliminated as well as fixing the pictorical layer where it was considered necessary.

Below we show pictures of before and after cleaning the modern repaints, some details prior to the intervention, a detail of the cleaning process and two moments of the process of reintegration of the painting.

Luis Tristán

The work was acquired in Seville in 2014 and became part of the stable collection of the Museo del Greco. In October 2015 it was sent to the IPCE (Spanish Cultural Heritage Institute) for an intervention, since it had numerous repaints and several tears that affected the support and pictorical layer.

It is part of one of the various Apostolates from the workshop of Tristán of which we have news.
