The candidates for Locarno Pro’s Match Me! 2021, to be held from 2 through 8 August, have just been announced. They are Cristina Fraile, Cristina Hergueta and Carlos Pardo Ros. ICAA is one of the active partners in the programme, consisting of a number of activities aimed at building community between key players in international production.
Cristina Fraile
In recent years, Cristina Fraile’s film production company, The Maluta* Films, founded in 2008 in San Sebastian, has developed projects with profound social and historical implications, always from a human rights perspective.
The company’s filmography includes: ‘Margolaria’ / ‘The Painter’ (Oier Aranzabal, 2019), ‘Zutik’ (Ainara Mendiola, 2019), ‘Haizaren Egia’ (Ekain Albite, 2020) and ‘Apaiz Kartzela’ (Ritxi Lizartza, Oier Aranzabal and David Pallarès, 2021).
Currently under development at The Maluta* Films are ‘Hezurrak’, by Ainhoa Gutiérrez del Pozo (90 min); ‘Ainarak’, by Juan San Martin and Ritxi Lizartza (75 min); and ‘Koaxi’, by Naia Arantzamendi.
Cristina Hergueta
Founded by Cristina Hergueta in 2017, Garde is a film production company specialising in auteur cinema. Some of its productions have been selected for screening at festivals including Cannes, San Sebastian, CPH:DOX and Visions du Réel. Garde believes in a handcrafted approach to cinema that requires time and care from the whole team and ensures the possibility of enjoying the process of creation in its entirety.
The company’s filmography includes: ‘Los inocentes’ / ‘The Blameless’ by Guillermo Benet (2020), ‘Gorria’ / ‘Red’ by Maddi Barber (2020) and ‘Nosotros’ by Felipe Vara de Rey (2018).
Currently under development at Garde are: ‘Los caballos’ by Pedro G. Romero (experimental) 100 min; and ‘Esto no es una poesía’ by various directors (series of short films), 30 min.
Carlos Pardo Ros
Founded in 2017 by Carlos Pardo Ros, DVEIN Films has produced many films that have been seen at festivals including Locarno, San Sebastian, Visions du Réel, FIDMarseille and Slamdance. Some of its projects under development have been chosen to take part at the Ikusmira-berriak programme or at the residencies of the Academia de Cine Española, while Carlos Pardo Ros himself was selected for Berlinale Talents 2021.
The company’s filmography includes: ‘<3’, by María Antón Cabot (2018); ‘Violeta + Guillermo’, by Óscar Vincentelli (2018); ‘Mudanza Contemporánea’, by Teo Guillem (2018); and ‘La sangre es blanca’, by Óscar Vincentelli (2020).
Currently under development at DVEIN Films are: ‘Last Night I Conquered the City of Thebes’, by Gabriel Azorín (drama), 90 min; ‘I am Vertical but I Would Rather Be Horizontal’, by María Antón Cabot (drama), 45 min; and ‘H’, by Carlos Pardo Ros (experimental), 72 min; ‘The Sky on Earth’ by María Antón Cabot (science fiction, drama), 100 min.
A total of 24 up-and-coming producers from Estonia, Great Britain, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, the Philippines and Spain are taking part in the programme, which has been divided into two stages.
During the first stage, conceived as a warm up, the selected producers will have personalized one-to-one online meetings on August 2-4, and then, on August 6-8, they will meet face-to-face in Locarno with potential international business partners, with the purpose of strengthening relationships, exploring mutual interests and finding potential co-producers.
A networking platform for upcoming producers, Match Me! is an initiative by Locarno Pro with the cooperation of nine partners: British Film Institute, Estonian Film Institute, Film Development Council of the Philippines, Istituto Luce Cinecittà - FilmItalia, Lithuanian Film Centre, National Film Centre of Latvia, Polish Film Institute, ICA Portugal and ICAA Spain.
