Third Stage (1814-1820)

The Third Stage is parallel to the reign of Ferdinand VII, best known as "sexenio absolutista" -six-year period of political absolutism-. This means the returning of Ferdinand VII to the Spanish Throne in 1814, where he eliminates all measures taken by the national institutions, until the victory of the uprising of the lieutenant colonel Rafael del Riego on January 1, 1820 that brought back constitutionalism. This period was characterized for sending expeditionary armies to America to suffocate the rebellion. This will be a great opportunity for the independence leaders to turn the conflict in a fight for the independence of the American territories. The Spanish cause losses great amount of the peoples support. Territories like Colombia, Venezuela and Argentina find turn victorious with independence
