The Archives of the Crown of Aragon is one of the oldest archival institutions in Europe and preserve one of the most important documentary collections of Medieval Europe. It has the recognition of the European Heritage Label due to its role in the history and culture of Europe. This badge, awarded by the European Commission in March 2015, is held by many institutions across Europe. The archive was also included in the intergovernmental category of European Heritage since its creation in 2007.
After the recommendation issued in 2014, December by a group of experts from the European Commission for the Archives of the Crown of Aragon to be recognised with the European Heritage Label, the Commission decided to award this important distinction to the Archive (Official Journal of the European Union of 11 March 2015, 2015/C 83/03).
The granting of the European Heritage Label represents a recognition of the Archives of the Crown of Aragon’s commitment to preserve and disseminate the rich documentary heritage of its collections, an exceptional testament to the building of the European history and culture. The Archive also form part of the communication and promotion strategy developed by the European Union, which aims to give greater visibility to the sites that have this Label.
